"My passion is people's faces."
Photographer Katelyn Thomas is feeding that passion at her new studio in downtown Port Deposit.
Last month, she opened a portrait photography studio between Joe's Grog House and the Gerry House in the unit block of South Main Street.
Thomas, 40, a native of Wyoming, Delaware, lived in Baltimore City before moving to the Port Deposit area a decade ago. "I missed the country life and moved here," she said. "I love these buildings and the charm."
She has been a commercial photographer and location photographer and has now settled in at the studio. Her interest in photography peaked when she became caretaker for her brother's children. "I wanted to record everything," she said.
Her education hasn't stopped. "I am constantly learning. I go to workshops, seminars, and other programs," she said. She also said that photographers should never stop learning and constantly strive to improve."
"When you stop learning, the world passes you by. There is always more to learn," Thomas said.
She specializes in studio portraits of newborns, children, seniors, women, and families. She also has an extensive collection of props. She hosted a special event, a themed Enchanted Fairy appointment day in June. Another is planned, Superhero Day, on August 24. She will have capes, masks, props and special backdrops as well as special pricing for that day.
She said, so far things are going well. "I don't have my sign up yet. I've had several clients and I'm pretty excited," she said.
She said she still does location shoots but enjoys being in the studio. "All the stuff is here in the studio," she said.
And now that she has settled in, she wants to become part of the town. She hopes the monthly Port-Palooza events are brought back. She also plans to join the town's chamber of commerce.
"I still believe in Port Deposit. It is such a neat, historic town. Back in its heyday, it was fantastic," she said.
Studio hours are Sundays from 1-5 p.m., by chance, and by appointment. Thomas also offers wedding and location photography. For more information and appointments call 410-378-4521.
