Calvert Elementary students didn't make their goal when it came to raising money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Instead, they collected nearly double what they had hoped.
"They learn what blood cancer is and the impact of cancer. They learn about chemo and compassion for children," said Grant. Who said she is dedicated to this cause because all funds collected stay in Maryland.
"The kids are so excited. They empty their piggy banks to help," said Grant.
Students will search their parents cars, under couch cushions, and will check almost anywhere for spare change in an effort to fill the collection boxes.
This effort is known as Pennies for Patients, and more recently, Pasta for Pennies.
Third graders from Kelly Justus' class will be rewarded for being the class which collected the most.
They raised $484.04 and will receive a free meal from Elkton Olive Garden.
