Cecil County councilman Mike Dunn isn't budging.
Dunn is not in favor of increasing the salary of the Cecil County Sheriff above the current $71,500. The sheriff's salary is set by code in contrast to salaries of those who lead other county departments.
The Cecil County delegation wants unanimous support before making a move.
Dunn said he reviewed the issue and wants to take no action. "I agree," said Councilwoman Diana Broomell. She said now is not the time to take on new costs.
Council woman Joyce Bowlsbey said that deputies serving under the sheriff earn more than he does. George "Mickey" Tarr, the county's Director of Law Enforcement, earns $84,448 per year, and reports to the sheriff. Mary Allen, the county's Deputy Director of Corrections earns $62,275 per year. Detention Center Director Randy Rudy earns $69,138 annually. Jeffrey Clewer, who directs Community Corrections, earns $90,230 per year.
Bowlsbey suggested the county raise the sheriff's salary by $4,000. "Four thousand is not going to sink this county," she said.
"If we pay less, we get less," said Council man Alan McCarthy. He also said the sheriff hasn't gotten a raise in eight years. McCarthy also suggested a bonus for the sheriff's performance.
"The voters evaluate the performance," said Council president Robert Hodge.
"This just isn't the year (to raise it). Put it off another year," said Broomell. Broomell said that other county employees get a one percent raise. In fiscal year 2013, deputies received a one percent cost of living adjustment.
The sheriff oversees a budget of $18.7 million per year.
