When Renee Capano and her family want to go kayaking, they head to Perry Point, Havre de Grace, or North East.
Now Capano, a member of the town board in Charlestown, would like to have a safe launching place closer to home.
She faced opposition when she presented a plan to her fellow commissioners. She said that a fellow board member questioned whether a facility would be used by more than just Capano's family.
Charlestown already has areas where people launch boats. But for safety reasons, kayakers would ideally have their own launch. Capano said having a place for kayaks would help alleviate congestion at other boat launches in town.
Capano has been kayaking for eight to nine years. She explained it's appeal.
"It's exercise. The whole family can do it together. My 11-year-old son can do it. It's family time," said Capano.
She also said it's educational. "There are places you can get in a kayak that you can't get to with a boat," she said.
Anyone with an opinion regarding the installation of a kayak launch in Charlestown is asked to call town hall at 410-287-6173 or email your thoughts to email@example.com. You may also leave your thoughts on the Town of Charlestown's facebook page.
Commissioner Capano said she will share the information that is gathered with the Charlestown town board on September 10.
