The Country Thyme Garden Club's community involvement is in full bloom.
For about 14 years the club has hosted an annual auction. The proceeds from the auction are then turned back to the community for various projects.
This year, the club will host their plant auction on May 7 at the Calvert Grange, Route 273, just beyond the Calvert light. The preview of items
begins at 5 p.m. The auction starts at 6 p.m.
Country Thyme Garden Club member Beth Warrington said that in prior years, donations from the auction have helped to fund tuition to 4-H Horticulture Club members who attend a competition. Other organizations which have received help are Plumpton Park Zoo, Tri State Bird Rescue, Ray of Hope Mission, and Fair Hill Nature Center. Boy Scout 28 has received camping supplies. In turn, troop members help carry items during the plant auction.
Warrington said that everyone in the club contributes to this event which is the only fundraiser Country Thyme holds each year. "It is a lot of work. But it's fun and everyone helps," said Warrington. She said that club members also share hints and tips for a bountiful harvest.
The group also sells items donated by local businesses. There is a giant garden basket this year. Raffle tickets for that will only be available at the auction.
Christine Ryan is a member of the club. She is providing petunias and a hanging basket for the auction. "There are always bargains for plants and things to fill out your garden," said Ryan.
Food and drink will be sold at the event. Hot dogs, sloppy Joe and soft drinks are on the menu. Baked goods will also be sold. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment. No credit cards will be accepted. For more information about this event call 410-658-6620.
Anyone interested in joining the Country Thyme Garden Club, the group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church.
