After spending her summer behind a desk performing administrative duties, Amanda Easter is ready to get back to the studio.
Easter leads the Dance program for Elkton Parks and Recreation. This summer, she filled in for a staffer to take maternity leave. Now she's ready to start her 13th year teaching dance.
Easter is a member of the National Dance Association. She has been dancing for 14 years. She started assisting with teaching at age 18. Under her direction, enrollment in the Parks and Rec. dance classes has nearly tripled. There are approximately 230 participants and more than two dozen classes of different types are offered each week. Morgan Hull also teaches in the second floor studio at Elkton's town hall building.
Easter said the goals of dance classes are basic. They are geared to helping people stay active and keeping young people busy. "It's a discipline. We have fun but we want them to learn," said Easter.
The dance classes all lead to two big events. Each May, a two-day recital is held at Elkton High School. For the holidays, there is also a Christmas show also held at Elkton High.
Classes being offered for 2015-16 are Ballet/Jazz, Advanced Ballet, Lyrical, and Adult, Ballet/Tap Combination, and Hip Hop. There are day, after school, and evening classes. Fees start at $64 and up. For more information regarding these programs call Elkton Parks and Recreation at 410-620-7964.
