With nine months until the 2014 primary election, the local political races are already heating up.
As of Wednesday, September 11, five men have filed for the position of Cecil County Sheriff.
All the candidates are currently police officers in the county. Miller, Sutton, and Adams are all currently employed with the Cecil Sheriff's Office.
Morgan works for North East Police Department. Peterson is Rising Sun's police chief.
In other races, Michael "Good Mike" W. Dawson, a Republican, has filed for both Republican Central Committee and Cecil County Council District/Circuit 4. A pair of incumbents have also filed in hopes of retaining their posts. Republican Derrick W. Lowe wants to stay on as Clerk of the Circuit Court. Democrat Allyn "Lyn" Price Nickle wants to remain the Register of Wills.
The primary will be held June 24, 2014.
Offices up for election are governor/lieutenant governor, comptroller, attorney general, state senate, house of delegate, county council district circuit 2, county council district circuit 3, county council district circuit 4, state's attorney, clerk of the court, register of wills, judge of the orphan's court, sheriff, board of education district circuit 3, board of education district circuit 4, board of education district circuit 5, and central committee. The general election is set for November 4, 2014. As of September 3, there were 23,512 registered Democrats in the county. There are 24,080 registered Republicans. Votes who are unaffiliated totals 12,837. There are 251 registered libertarians, 132 in the green party, and eight registered in the American party.
