When Mark Hyman took over leading Rising Sun's annual Youth Fishing Derby, he and his wife, Donna were the parents of two children.
Fast forward 14 years and Hyman, now has a third child, John, 12, who helps with the derby.
"I look forward to it. I can't give it up now. It's part of me," said Hyman, who took over coordinating the derby from Jesse Cox. This year, the event is set for Saturday, May 5 at the pond on West Main Street. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Fishing begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 11 a.m. Those who want to have all paperwork in order prior to the event, may obtain the permission forms from the Rising Sun Fishing Derby facebook page.
Derby sponsors include Elkton Ford, Ramsey Ford, Town of Rising Sun, Innovative Diesel, Crothers Insurance, the Rising Sun Chamber of Commerce and others. "Nobody ever says no when we ask them to help out," said Hyman. "We have loyal sponsors and people jump in and help."
Hyman said the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun Fire Police have quietly helped with the event for years, ensuring that children and families safely get to the pond. Last year, there were 47 participants. "We keep it the same every year. It's in town and it's part of the town and the local businesses help out with it," he said.
Admission is free and is limited to children ages 12 and under. The derby is held rain or shine.
Participants must supply their own bait and tackle. Each child who attends receives a gift bag.
