Galbreath, who works at the Perryville and Port Deposit libraries, is a computer tutor. When she is not teaching a class for veterans on computer basics, Galbreath provides one-on-one instruction.
She teaches one class to veterans from Perry Point on Monday mornings and two more classes on Wednesdays. "They've done so much for us," Galbreath said. "It's nice to be able to help them."
"A job search is not the way it used to be," she said. "People find listings on the internet and apply online."
After giving instruction on the basics and mouse skills, lessons move on to the internet. Galbreath also helps participants set up email addresses. She also provides instruction for Excel and Microsoft Word.
"Life now revolves around the computer," she said.
The libraries offer an hour of one-on-one sessions. Participants are permitted to return later for additional sessions.
There have been many success stories.
"People come in to thank us and tell us they've gotten a job," said Galbreath. "It's a nice service we can offer for our patrons and the community in general. We're here to help."
Appointments must be made in advance by calling the Perryville library at 410-996-6070. Galbreath is in Port Deposit on Tuesday afternoons. There are no evening sessions but Galbreath does work some Saturdays. "We do everything we can to accommodate people," she said.
Many of the other Cecil County Public Library branches also offer computer lessons. Visit cecil.ebranch.info for more details.
Galbreath says once patrons have learned the basics they can receive more in-depth instruction by taking advantage of the library's Learn4Life program which provides online classes in computers and numerous other topics.
