Rob Billingham is gearing up to get local men back in the game.
And some big names from the sports world are coming to help.
The third annual Men's Training Camp will be held at Janes United Methodist Church, Rising Sun on Saturday, September 12 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Billingham said he is not sure how many men to anticipate. Two years ago, 150 attended the first training camp. Last year, the number increased to 180.
"We want to help men be better husbands, better fathers, and better leaders. We want them to set the example and live by the example," said Billingham.
The goal for this event is to "reach men in all walks of life" and help them connect at home, in church, and in their communities. This event is helping Billingham connect with men from Shiloh Tabernacle in Quarryville, churches in Kennett Square, Pa., Living Faith Christian Center, Conowingo Baptist Church, and both Way of Life Community Church and Way of Life Outdoors. "One of the things we really strive for is that the churches need to be a community," said Billingham. The churches are from many denominations.
And although there is a sports theme, Fred Dollenger, who attends Way of Life Community Church, said he is not a sports person.
"Any man could come and feel at home," said Dollenger.
Sports is a tool to draw men in but organizers promise the message will go beyond that.
"The biggest thing we're trying to do this is get guys excited, get them motivated and capture that," said Steve Basht, one of the Training Camp committee members.
The event kicks off with free breakfast at 8 a.m. Lunch items will be available for purchase. There will also be vendors, exhibits, door prizes, and a silent auction featuring signed sports memorabilia. A love offering will be taken.
Pre-registration is encouraged, so food planning can get underway. Register at firstname.lastname@example.org "We encourage registration but we never turn anyone away," said Billingham.
