The Cecil County Public Library system last week began lending STEM Exploration Kits.
Designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, the themed kits come in a sealable plastic tub and contain books and hands-on materials which support different aspects of STEM, Rising Sun library branch man- ager Jennifer Carter said.
Each library branch has a binder which consists of suggested activities and a description of the contents and lists the 12 different topics available – including bones, astronomy, body systems, bugs, and circuits.
All 12 kits are not kept at every branch but can be requested.
The kits can be borrowed for three weeks. Library branches also have Sprout learning bags for preschool children. Two of these items can be borrowed at one time. Patrons can borrow either two STEM kits, two Sprout bags, or one of each.
"It's important for people to know we have these kits which also include books," Carter said. "There are also other options available at other branches."
The launch of the kits was made possible through a donation from Delmarva Power. "We are very appreciative of their generous donation in support of STEM exploration," said Frazier Walker, the library's community relations manager.
