Matt Lowder, teen librarian, and the rest of the staff at the North East Library have been incredibly busy lately.
The annual Library Summer Reading Program is getting people to the branch to sign up to read, register for programs, and look at the prizes being offered.
"It's been more and more every year. Every summer there have been dozens more than the previous year," said Lowder.
The library staffers spend a great deal of time promoting summer reading. They go out to schools and encourage children to sign up. "I went to North East Middle School and was on the announcements. It was worth waking up early to do that," said Lowder.
Lowder said that the free programs get people to the library. Staffers from all the county branches work together to come up with programs. Some are returning favorites, others are new offerings. North East will offer the programs, Movers and Groovers and On My Own for young children throughout the summer months. There will also be a gardening program, an agriculture program, music programs, a Winterthur Museum program, magic, and more.
Lowder said that the "Every Hero has a Story" theme is a good one. "There are a good blend of heroes in fiction and non-fiction," said Lowder.
He said that programs are already filling up. An ice cream program, any program where teens dress in costumes, and Lego programs are Lowder's personal favorites. There will also be a Top Chef competition at the branch in July. Teams of two will compete with their best dishes.
The annual Super Summer Picnic, for all who participated in summer reading, is set for Wednesday, August 5 from noon until 2 p.m. at the North East Town Park. There will be music, games, Mr. Softee ice cream, Kona Ice, and Herr's chips.
