Mike Rose changes with the times.
Rose, a magician who has performed at the Cecil County Library branches each summer, creates a new show each year to complement the library's summer reading program theme.
"This year, the theme is Build a Better World, so it's about building and construction and things like that. I created a magic show, (which) is Magician at Work. I just basically go through my library of 2,500 magic books and I just look for tricks that kind of give me ideas to go with the theme," said Rose.
"The most time consuming part is coming up with specific tricks that I'm going to do, because you want ones that are different from the years before but it still has to go along with the theme," said Rose.
"When doing something new (a trick) you have got to put a lot of time into it and if it is a variation of something I just have to work on the presentation more so than the mechanics of it. Some of them (the tricks) are easier than others. But there is always several hours and it could be days, working on it. Also when you do it live in front of people, you have to fine tune things," he said.
There were 24 children that attended the show at the North East Library earlier this summer. The show ran for about 45 minutes.
Rose had four volunteers from the audience to assist him with some of tricks during the show.
The children definitely enjoyed the show and always are willing to volunteer, he said. It seems as though all the children wanted to be involved.
"With the kids, they will raise their hands (to volunteer) before I even ask," said Rose.
He has been a magician for 35 years, performing about 300 shows a year.
Rose also has been doing library magic shows for about 20 years.
"I wanted a magic kit for my birthday when I was kid and I got it, and I started practicing the tricks and after I learned all of those, I wanted to learn more. So I went to my public library and read all the magic books there. This is why I have a library of magic books, because thats really how I learned during my formative years because they didn't have DVDs, and I didn't have another magician as a mentor," said Rose.
