Sgt. Todd Creek and a host of school officials are gearing up to alleviate your fears.
A school safety meeting will be held at Rising Sun High School on Thursday, April 5 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be tailored to the schools in the Rising Sun feeder pattern - Calvert and Rising Sun elementary, Rising Sun Middle, and Rising Sun High. But all who are interested are welcome to attend.
"We've done this in the past. But since Florida and St. Mary's County, that has piqued everyone's interest," said Sgt. Creek.
He said he personally hasn't fielded a great deal of questions in the wake of the most recent school shootings. He said that school administrators are getting more questions. Those are discussed during meetings with resource officers and school staff. "They are just in general getting more questions," he said.
"Are we prepared? We're about as prepared as we can be," said Sgt. Creek.
"We're in year two of ALICE. We'll just be maintaining (the training now). We've taught them how to react and what to do to give them the best chance to survive," Creek said.
"ALICE is about you making the best decision for that situation. None of these (school shooting) things are ever the same and they are all chaotic. St. Mary's County was a domestic (dispute) involving teenagers," he said.
This isn't the first school safety meeting. Sgt. Creek said that a smaller meeting, with about 40 parents in attendance, was held shortly after the Parkland, Florida school shootings.
That was held at the request of Rising Sun Middle parents.
