North East High School is about to get a lot more colorful.
Artoberfest 2013 is on its way.
Dean Gilger, visual arts teacher, chair of the art department, and chair of Artoberfest, founded the event, now in its fourth year, as a way to give the school a chance to interact with the community and arts community. "We wanted to show everyone what is going on in the arts," said Gilger.
Artoberfest will be held on Friday, October 11 from 3-7 p.m. in the school courtyard.
The student art contest will feature drawings, paintings, photography, graphic design, ceramics, and more. There will be judging and prizes. There will be a talent show, and a performance by the school's Blue Crew Marching Band. There will be sports, games, and face painting. There will also be vocal performers, raffles, and a silent auction.
There will also be art vendors - local artisans showing and selling their wares. "We have professional artists interacting with students. I would like more local artists and craftsman involved," said Gilger. Gilger, who is also a landscape photographer, will show his work. There will also be pottery, goat milk soap and lotion, and jewelry.
The talent show will feature acting, singing, a pianist, and a ukulele player. There will be 10 separate performances whittled down from about 20 who auditioned.
"This is a community event. A goal from the creation was to have the kids interact with the community and the artists in the community," added Gilger.
