Steven Snyder has hooked himself a big one.
Snyder, 14, an eighth grader at Perryville Middle School, has wormed his way into a major fishing competition.
Actually he worked his way there.
That event will be held August 4-7 in Huntsville, Alabama. This is a prestigious FLW (Fishing League Worldwide) event.
Snyder is an avid fisherman. He is a member of the Mid Atlantic Youth Anglers, BASS College, and the Brandywine Bass Masters. He has been fishing for a decade but four years ago devoted himself to the sport. He also fishes with Special Olympics.
His mother, Krista Gill-Snyder explained that Steven has some learning disabilities. When he's fishing, those don't matter. "I want to be a Bass Master and this is a step for it," Snyder said.
Locally, you can catch Snyder fishing in the Elk Neck area. He also avidly fishes in the upper bay, and in Pennsylvania and Delaware. But he has also fished in many local tournaments. He qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup by competing in a tournament in Pa. He will represent that state in the junior worlds.
Now that he has earned the trip, Snyder is working to raise at least $1,500 to fund the trip to Alabama. Donations may be sent to Steven Snyder P.O. Box 331 Charlestown, MD. 21914.
