Kathy Gray is using up to the minute technology to share Port Deposit's rich history.
Gray, clerk for the Town Of Port Deposit, has created a Facebook page for the town. She shares not only pertinent information such as when meetings and events will be held, she shares what she researches about the town's past.
"I go to a history web page. The New York Times also has 30 pages of articles on Port Deposit. It's amazing what's out there," said Gray.
"My goal is to get more likes than there are people in the town," she said. As of last week, the page had been "liked" (meaning people can see the daily postings) by 540 people. There are 675 residents in the town.
And she is attracting people from near and far with her history lessons. She has had people from India and Germany visit the page. She's also gotten feedback. "It's all positive. People love it," said Gray. A recent computer system outage had people longing for their lesson. She also didn't post when she was on vacation. She was welcomed back warmly by those who missed their daily dose.
"I want to pull people into the town," she said. "I like doing it. It's a lot of fun."
And the effort worked. In April, a group of nine women, who learned about the town by way of facebook, came to the town and took a walking tour. "If we can get people into the town, maybe we can get new businesses," added Gray.
