Philip Meck is expanding operations of the Earleville-area farm that he works along with his brother.
Meck is building a pair of giant poultry houses in the 4700 block of Augustine Herman Highway just south of Hacks Point. When those two buildings are finished next spring, they will be home to chickens.
A lot of chickens.
Once construction on the concrete and wood buildings is complete, 88,000 chickens will be housed there.
But Meck won't be tending all those chickens.
He's merely the landlord. Coleman Natural Foods, a certified organic and antibiotic free chicken company, will run the business. Coleman has been working with family farmers to grow and raise organics since the 1870s.
"We have a dairy in Earleville and now we're putting chickens here. Healthy chickens," said Meck.
