When it comes to gravy making, Ann Gibney isn't taking shortcuts.
Gibney, president of the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun Ladies Auxiliary is keeping up a family tradition.
"All the gravy is just like my mother made," said Gibney.
"It's all for the fire company. We don't use anything for ourselves," said Gibney.
The monthly menu features home fries, scrambled eggs and eggs made to order, chipped beef gravy, sausage gravy, scrapple, sausage patties, bacon, biscuits, French toast, pancakes, waffles, two juices, and regular and decaf coffee. The auxiliary also makes a special menu surprise item which could be monkey bread, fresh chopped fruit, or apple crisp.
Gibney said that each of the auxiliary volunteers has their own niche. Walter Funk mans the grill. Gibney does the potatoes and gravy. Connie Schuman mixes up eggs. "Everybody has a little job," said Gibney.
In the two years since it started, Gibney said the meal has attracted an average of 75-80 people per month. "We have a lot of regulars who come every time we have it. We also have a lot who come after church," she said.
And it's not just those who attend who like it.
"We really enjoy doing it. We try to make as much homemade as we can," said Gibney. "We started it because we wanted to make some money for the fire company. It's good for the community and I like to do things that benefit the community. We really enjoy doing the breakfasts."
There are special events held during some of the breakfasts. At Easter, children who attend, receive Easter baskets. The breakfast Sunday closest to Veterans Day, veterans eat free. At Christmas, Santa doles out gifts to children.
The Community Fire Company of Rising Sun Ladies Auxiliary breakfast is served the second Sunday of every month, except during July and August, at the fire house, 300 Biggs Highway. The buffet is open beginning at 7:30 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. The cost for adults is $7 per person. Children under age 12 eat for $4. All are welcome.
