Rising Sun High School is mixing tradition with new technology in bringing their spring play to the stage.
"Pride and Prejudice" comes to the school beginning this evening.
The story is adapted from the Jane Austen novel by Jane Kendall. The plot centers around the effort of Mrs. Bennet to marry off her five daughters. "It's a story, in essence, about a family. The message is timeless. It has romance, comedy, heartbreak, and tragedy," said Director Tess Garrett. "This allows us to focus on character development. These are well-rounded, big characters."
Garrett said she also used new technology for creating the technical plans, flyers, and rehearsal schedule. "Our organization has been different and better this year," said Garrett.
Cast members are excited.
Abigail Ince, who plays Elizabeth, was a Jane Austen fan before taking a role. "I come to rehearsal everyday. It's stressful and tiring but I manage. I've read the book. I'm a huge fan of the book. Elizabeth was my favorite character and now I get to be here," said Ince.
Tommy Maillie is portraying Mr. Darcy. "He's a guy who thinks he's better than everyone else in the room. He doesn't adhere to social norms. It's a fun part to play," said Maillie.
Nick Stritzinger is playing an adult and father of those his age. "It's strange to be a parent. I'm not older than these people here and I have to act like it," said Stritzinger.
"Pride and Prejudice" will take to the stage March 10-13. The Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. The Sunday show is at 3 p.m. You may purchase tickets online at www.rshsmd.booktix.com/ Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students and school system staff. The play will be performed in the Rising Sun High School auditorium.
Cate Dymowski is playing one of the daughters, Lydia. "I was in the play last year and this is a bigger role. It's a lot more responsibility. I run cross country and track. I blend in there. In a play, you take the spotlight. You can be something you're not usually," said Dymowski.
