If you need a quick, colorful, pick me up, mum's the word.
That's what Sharon Crawford, an employee at Biddle's Market in south Chesapeake City recommended last week. "The mums are beautiful this year," said Crawford, of the store's display of locally grown mums.
She explained that growers produce different hybrids each year. They are intermixing colors and the result is beautiful, including this year's pink and yellow cross breed.
"People still come and buy mums. They come back every year so you are not wasting your money. Flowers are a good way to cheer up without spending a lot of money," she said.
Biddle's Market also has a selection of pumpkins.
"The pumpkins are plentiful and nice-sized. The pumpkins did good this year. It dried up enough so they are good. I remember years (when it was wet) and the pumpkins fell apart," she said. Crawford said that larger pumpkins are popular for carving. People with younger children opt for smaller pumpkins which children can paint.
