A pair of Rising Sun Middle School students are being lauded for their artwork.
Elizabeth Betts, a 13-year-old eighth grader, and sixth grader Madison Moore, 11, both students of art teacher Carol Mangano, have picked up awards in recent weeks.
Maryland Masters honors an elementary, middle, and high schooler in each of the state's 24 jurisdictions each year.
Betts will be honored at a future Cecil County Board of Education reception which will feature an unveiling of her work.
"It's very geometric. It's mixed media with cubism and shading," said Betts, as she described her award-winning work.
"This is very exciting."
Moore, the daughter of Jeff and Rebecca Moore of Rising Sun, is the winner of the Rising Sun Lions Club's annual Peace Poster contest. Each year, Lions Clubs around the world sponsor the contest. This art contest encourages young people around the world to express their vision of peace.
"I drew a world, people holding hands to represent peace, and peace signs," said Moore, as she described her work.
Moore's poster was selected as the best among sixth graders in the school by Mangano. It will now be submitted to a state-wide Lions sponsored competition.
