Food, craft vendors, and a whole lot of rubber ducks will be part of VFW Post 6027's annual Family Day at North East Park.
"The community will benefit because everything we raise goes back into the community," said an event spokesperson who said she was speaking on behalf of Post Commander Donald L. Griffith.
The event will be held this weekend, Saturday, September 7, in the park off Walnut Street. Activities kick off at 10 a.m.
Food vendors will be serving up pit beef, pit ham, crab cakes, ice cream, nachos, Italian sausage, French fries, hot dogs, and burgers.
One of the highlights of the day will be the rubber ducky races. The first of three races begins at 11 a.m. Prior to the race, numbered ducks are placed in the water. Prizes are then awarded for the first three places. The owner of the winning duck collects $300. Second place duck earns $200. Third place is $100.
Door prizes will also be awarded by duck number. Each rubber duck entry costs $5.
This year, the scope of entertainment has also been expanded. The Upper Bay Museum will be open for tours. Artisans from Chesapeake Wooden Boat Builders School will also be showing their craft.
Strength in Numbers, a Zumba group, will also provide demonstrations throughout the day. Beginning at 6 p.m., the featured entertainers will provide a free show. This show will feature tribute artists, The Cruisers, who will provide impressions of Elvis, The Big Bopper, Patsy Cline, and more. That show should finish before 8 p.m.
There will be plenty of parking in the park. Additional parking will be available at the field along Mauldin Avenue. For more information or to reserve a duck call VFW Post 6027 at 410-287-7817.
