The water main break shut off water, closed streets and caused Rising Sun Middle School to close at 12:30 p.m.
The Town of Rising Sun released the following message Wednesday night through its Facebook page "Rising Sun Town Administrator": WATER MAIN BREAK UPDATE #7 The 2nd break has been isolated. The pipe is being cleaned and checked for any hidden hair line cracks. A new clamp will be installed; the hole will be backfilled with concrete and allowed to sit for a bit to cure. The hole will then be covered in stone and black top and the water turned back on very slowly. There will be a delay in getting full water pressure to your homes because we do not want to charge the lines with pressure too quickly. This is a very old line. This will likely take at least 2 more hours to complete. Hopefully water can be restored around 10 pm or so.
Here are some of the obstacles the crews are facing.
1. You have to pick a point that you think that leaks is at and dig from there.
2. You find the leak and fix it but have no way of knowing whether there are other cracks in the area unless you dig up the line to check – this creates more damage to the street, affects more traffic and extend the overall repair time, leaving people without water for a much longer period of time.
3. Once the repairs are made, you cannot just turn the water on, because without the protection of the back fill and concrete, the exposed line will not hold up to the additional water pressure when water is turned back on – therefore you have to back fill and complete the work and then turn the water on. If a new leak presents itself you have to start all over again, which means digging out all the material you just put in.
