No one is really sure why 18-wheelers are using Slicers Mill Road and getting stuck.
But an effort is underway to close the road to tractor trailers.
"There is a 90 degree turn in the road and tractor trailers are not able to negotiate the turn and they have to go back. "It's not a weight issue, it's a roadway geometry issue," said Cecil County Director of Public Works Scott Flanigan.
"It is a short cut road. But I don't know the designation of the drivers.”
If the plan is approved, all of Slicers Mill Road, from Route 1 to Spring Hill Road, will be prohibited to 18 wheelers. The problem is the near 90 degree turn from the west approach to the bridge over Stone Run. In the interest of public safety, and to prevent stuck trucks from backing up the length of the roadway, a weight limit is proposed.
A resolution approving the implementation of a 35-ton gross vehicle weight limit on Slicers Mill Road was introduced on September 2. A public hearing regarding this matter will be held October 7 at 7 p.m. in the County Administration Building, Chesapeake Boulevard, Elkton. A decision is expected to be rendered on October 21.
